With the mountain stages behind us, it was business as usual in the seventeenth stage over 155km. Again the sprinters were denied a chance to win a stage. Erik Dekker (The Netherlands) and Mario Aerts (Belgium) managed to escape a few kilometers before the line and finished just in front of the peloton. Dekker won, his third stage victory this year, ahead of Erik Zabel (Germany) and Fred Rodriguez (USA). Lance Armstrong kept the yellow jersey.
The stage in the game was won by Geert Schoenmakers (The Netherlands). He collected two more points than the participants that shared second place: Jan Buiten (The Netherlands) and Jarmo Hemminki (Finland). Wil Gommans stays in the lead in the overall rankings. E. Gaas drops from second to third because Ferry Deurloo has advanced to second place. Once again the top three of the overall rankings is completely Dutch.
Today four cyclists abandoned the race. The most important were Alex Zulle (member of 666 teams) and Marco Pantani (586).
