TdF Stage 16: July 25, 2001

The second longest stage this year (229 km) has developed in the same way as yesterday's stage. This time a group finished 25 minutes ahead of the peloton and Germany's Jens Voigt claimed the stage victory. There were no changes at the top of the jersey rankings.

The participants with sprinters in their teams will be happy about the fact that today's break only contained seven cyclists. This means that the top sprinters had a chance to get in the stage top ten. We saw two Australian cyclists in top stage positions today and consequently Australia did very well in the game. Dianna Gregory won the stage ahead of Steve Harrison and A.J. Hulme, an Australian 1-2-3, for the first time in the history of the game. In the overall rankings, Dutchman Reinier van Olderen took back the top position he lost to his fellow countryman Rene Coppens last Sunday. Pete Collins (UK/England) is third now.

A crash in this stage caused five cyclists to abandon the race. The most important victims were Sven Montgomery (member of 40 teams) and Marc Wauters (28).
