In the seventeenth stage over 194 km, sixteen cyclists managed to escape from the main group. But this time the peloton made a lot of effort to catch them. They caught many but not all: three riders managed to finish a few seconds before the rest. Belgium's Serge Baguet was the first at the line today. Lance Armstrong kept the yellow jersey.
With only three riders left from the break at the finish line, this is a good day for participants with many sprinters in their team. The stage was won by Rien Post (The Netherlands), his second stage win this year. Fellow countrymen Stefan Krummel and Remco van Veenendaal finished second and third. In the overall rankings, Dutchman Reinier van Olderen becomes the first participant to cross the 500-point barrier. Daniel McQuillen (USA) and Rens Jan Piket (The Netherlands) share second place.
