TdF Stage 19: July 28, 2001

The 149 km nineteenth stage of the Tour 2001 has ended with a sprint finish. For the third time this year, Germany's Erik Zabel was the fastest. There were no changes in the top of the jersey rankings. However, Zabel is only two points behind the leader in the green jersey rankings, Stuart O'Grady (Australia). The battle for this jersey will be decided in the final stage tomorrow.

Today we find a familiar name at the top of the stage results: Erix Schokker (The Netherlands). Not only does he obtain the highest stage score this year, 92 points, but he also manages something that no other game participant has managed before: win a stage in the game in five different years. Earlier Schokker obtained stage victories in 1995 (2), 1996 (3), 1998 and 1999. Fellow countryman Rien Post was second today and Remco van Veenendaal completed a Dutch 1-2-3. The top of the overall rankings did not change. Reinier van Olderen (The Netherlands) leads in front of Rens Jan Piket (The Netherlands) and Daniel McQuillen (USA). However, these three should take note of the participants at places four and five: Cameron Henderson (Australia) and Marco Moccetti (Switzerland). Their teams perform very well in stages with sprint finishes. Everyone expects a sprint finish tomorrow and in that case Henderson and Moccetti are a serious threat for the current top three.

Alvaro Gonzalez de Goldeano abandoned the race today. Thirty-five participants had awarded him a place in their teams.
