This is a list of the most popular Tour de France cyclists among the 1100 participants in the Internet Tour de France Game 2001. Every time that a cyclist appears at the first place of a team list he receives 15 points, for a second place 14 points and so on. All these points have been added together and the result is this list which represents the average choice of the participants in this game. After being the most popular cyclist for three years, Germany's Erik Zabel drops down to second place. It is the two-time yellow jersey winner Lance Armstrong (USA) who leads the rankings this year. Jan Ullrich from Germany completes the top three. Fifteen of the 189 riders have not been included in any team. Last year this number was 21 (of 180).
The top 15 of this list have been used to make the artificial competitor Jan Modaal (the Dutch version of John Doe).
This list contains the points of each cyclist together with his name and the number of participants that have chosen him in their teams (between brackets). The number of points has been computed by awarding 15 points for every first position in a team, fourteen for every second position and so on.
