Stage 16 was the toughest stage of this year's edition of the Tour. It contained three out-of-category climbs. The first was the Galibier, with 2645m the highest point of the 2002 Tour, then the Madeleine (2000m) and the finish line was on the top La Plagne (1880m). Dutchman Michael Boogerd attacked all day. At about half of the race he started a solo which earned him the stage win. It was the first mountain stage win in the Tour for an inhabitant of this flat country in more than a decade. Lance Armstrong finished third and extended his lead in the overall rankings.
After a second place in stage 15, Belgium's Senne Van Hoof claimed the victory in stage 16. His team collected three more points than the teams of Dutchmen Klaas Brouwer and Dirk-Johan. They shared second place. Arno Bakker (The Netherlands) lost two of the cyclists of his team today but this did not prevent him from taking the top position in the overall rankings. Aaron Martin (UK/Northern Ireland) moved up from place four to place two. Dutchmen Jack Crombag and Martin Smits are joint third now.
Some important cyclists did not make it to the finish today: Oscar Sevilla (member of 729 teams), Jimmy Casper (219) and Laurent Dufaux (66). Fred Rodriguez (138) and two other cyclists finished too late.
