In stage 17 the cyclists had to take four cols, one of category two and three of category one. A group of three riders finished before the rest. Italy's Dario Frigo crossed the line first. Lance Armstrong was 24th today. He finished in a group with his main rivals and kept the leader's jersey.
This was a difficult stage to predict because many less frequently chosen riders finished in the top ten. No less than 836 participants failed to obtain points today. Thanks to Frigo and Moncoutie, the team of P. Tellingen (The Netherlands) won the stage. Archie Simpson (UK/Scotland) and Jeff Buddington (USA) finished on a joint second place. In the top of the overall rankings, only Martin Smits (The Netherlands) obtained some points. He moves from place three to place two. Arno Bakker (The Netherlands) remains the overall leader and Aaron Martin (UK/Northern Ireland) drops from second to third.
Today three cyclists abandoned the race.
