TdF Stage 20: July 28, 2002

Martin Smits (The Netherlands) has won the Internet Tour de France Game 2002. Six cyclists of his team finished in the stage top ten today. This was enough for his team to earn nine more points than his co-leader in the game after yesterday, Dutchman Arno Bakker. This is only the second time that Smits participated in this game Last year he was 33rd. Bakker is second in the final overall rankings and fellow countryman Jack Crombag moved up from place six to complete a Dutch 1-2-3. Daniel McQuillen (USA) is the first non-Dutch player at place four. He is the only player managing to obtain a consecutive top ten position. Last year he was fifth.

The final stage in the Tour was won by Australia's Robbie McEwen. The stage win also earned McEwen the green jersey. Thereby he ends a six-year period in which Erik Zabel (Germany) took this sprinter's jersey. Lance Armstrong (USA) won his fourth consecutive Tour de France. Last year's number three, Joseba Beloki (Spain) was second now and Raimondas Rumsas (Lithuania) was third in his Tour de France debut. For the second year in a row France's Laurent Jalabert won the polka-dot jersey for the best climber. He was also voted the most combative rider of this edition of the Tour de France. Italy's Ivan Basso took the white jersey for the best young rider. The Spanish O.N.C.E. team won the team competition.

For the eighth time in a row the final stage of the Tour resulted in a sprint finish. This gave the sprinter teams in the game a chance to win a stage. The team of Rien Post (The Netherlands) has lost five cyclists but this did not prevent it from obtaining the highest score in the stage today. Post had already held the first position in the overall rankings for four stages but he had not yet won a stage in this edition of the game. Seven of the remaining ten men in his team finished in the stage top ten. Diamond Hosein (Germany) was second and Berthold B. Journaille (The Netherlands) third.

This has been a nice edition of the game with 17 different stage winners (only Maaike Kuipers has won two stages) and eight different participants holding the overall lead at some position in the game. Before the final stage there were two joint leaders and final results at the top of the overall rankings were determined in the final seconds of this edition of the Tour. Thank you all for participating and see you back in 2003!
