The 197 km long second stage of this Tour edition took the riders from Belgium to France, and surprisingly enough back to Belgium. There was a six-men break but the peloton caught it about 20 km before the line. The stage ended in a sprint finish. Like yesterday the expected Alessandro Petacchi (nine stage wins in the Giro) was unable to compete for the stage win. It was Robbie McEwen (Australia) who won the bunch sprint with a confident margin. Norway's Thor Hushovd collected enough bonus seconds and sprint points to take over both the yellow and the green jersey from Fabian Cancellara.
The stage in the game was won by Barbara Hoffellner (Austria). Of today's top ten only number nine (Glomser) was missing in her team. Hoffellner's score of 99 points is one of the highest ever stage scores recorded in this game. Tom Cone (USA) finished second while the third place was shared between Chiara Tosi (Italy), Karolina Szulc (Poland) and Rien Post (The Netherlands). Since this is the first stage participating in the game, Barbara Hoffellner is also the first overall leader.
