The final stage in the Alps was a tough one: 204 km with five cols among which one out-of-category climb. At the final top, five men were together: Armstrong, Landis, Ullrich, Kloden and Basso. The five stayed together in the descent and sprinted for the stage victory. Lance Armstrong was the strongest and he won his fourth individual stage.
In the game, the Armstrong's stage win was combined with another American stage win. Today Bruce Larson and Leighton Shank (both USA) obtained the highest score. Bruno Steurs of Belgium was third. Arthur Denneman (The Netherlands) remains on top in the overall rankings. However, runnerup Jan Matheeuwwsen from the same country is now only one point behind and the eight-point difference with the new number 3, Michael Botzet of Germany, also seems small. Tomorrow's stage will be crucial for the final results of the game. Denneman will benefit from a sprint finish but his competitors will hope that a breakaway group will prevent the sprinters from collecting points.
Today eight cyclists left the race. The most important of them was Roberto Heras (member of 758 game participant teams). Since stage 16 there is no complete team left in the game. At this moment seven teams still have 14 riders.
