TdF Stage 20: July 25, 2004

Arthur Denneman (The Netherlands) has won the Internet Tour de France Game 2004. In the final stage he collected sixteen more points than his closest rival and this was enough to move him up from place four to the top position. This is the ninth time that Denneman has taken part in the game and his previous best position was sixth in 2001. Denneman also won stages 8 and 9. He is the first participant since Michael Botzet in 1999 to combine an overall victory with stage victories.

The final stage with the finish at the Champs Elysees in Paris ended with the expected sprint finish. Tom Boonen from Belgium won his second stage. Lance Armstrong (USA) won the Tour de France for the sixth consecutive time, a record. Robbie McEwen (Australia) took the green jersey for the second time, France's Richard Virenque claimed his seventh polka-dot jersey (also a record) and Vladimir Karpets of Russia won the white jersey for the best young rider.

In the game, the final stage of this edition of the Tour was won by Billy Corgan (Norway). Bob Vos (The Netherlands) was second and game winner Arthur Denneman claimed third place in the stage. In the overall rankings, Storcky Lejo (Germany) keeps second place and Jan Matheeuwwsen (The Netherlands) finishes third. Michael Botzet of Germany is the first former game winner to obtain another top ten position: he is fourth. Rob Spaans (The Netherlands), third in 1998, achieved his second top ten position: eighth place. Former game winner Dutchman Martin Smits (2002) claimed an excellent 17th place.

This was a memorable Tour de France with a superb Lance Armstrong winning the race for a record sixth time. In the game many teams suffered from the retirements of Armstrong's closest rivals and top sprinters, many who left the race without earning their teams any points. Still the battle for the top positions in the game was interesting and the final positions were decided in the final stage where Arthur Denneman became the first participant in five years to break the 700-points barrier. Thank you all for participating and see you back in 2005!
