TdF Stage 18: July 21, 2005

Marcos Serrano has won the eighteenth stage over 189 km. The Liberty Seguros rider was a member of a ten man breakaway group which obtained a 15 minute lead over the peloton. Serrano escaped from the rest in the hills at the end of the stage. Armstrong, Basso, Evans and Ullrich also broke away at that spot and managed to win almost 40 seconds over Rasmussen. Ullrich is now a little bit more than two minutes behind the third-placed Danish rider and threatens to pass him in the individual time trial next Saturday.

The game teams suffer with these successful large breakaway groups. Today only 139 participants earned points. Michele Shapland (UK) collected the largest amount of points and won the stage ahead of Mats Ladehaug (Norway) and Brendan Foran (USA). The participants in the top of the overall rankings did not collect points so there were no changes there. Christopher Yaure (USA) and Matthias Kersten (Germany) remain the overall leaders.
