TdF Stage 20: July 23, 2005

In the individual time trial over 55 km, yellow jersey holder Lance Armstrong (USA) finally obtained the stage win he was looking for. Jan Ullrich was second and Alexandre Vinokourov third. Armstrong improved his lead in the overall rankings to second-placed Ivan Basso with almost two minutes. Ullrich took third place from Mikael Rasmussen. The unfortunate Dane fell twice and had to change his bike three times.

In the game, the stage was won by time trial specialist, Maaike Kuipers (The Netherlands). After winning two time trials in 2002, she wins her third stage with a score of 92 points, the second highest stage score this year. Mathew Mitchell (UK) was second and Nappy Chown (Canada) third. The top of the overall rankings changed again. The new overall leader is Ernstjan Kats (The Netherlands). He has a reasonable lead over second-placed Tony Kaminski (USA) and third-placed Cycopath Retsu (USA).

The top three of the overall rankings are capable of winning the game tomorrow. With an expected sprint finish in the final stage, fourteenth-placed Matthias Kersten (Germany) remains a candidate for the overall win because the top of his team contains the main successful sprinters. The final score differences are expected to be small.
