TdF Stage 16: July 25, 2007

Stage 16 completed the trilogy of Pyrenees stages and it was the toughest of the three: 218km with five climbs among which the finish at the out-of-category Aubisque, at the only mountain that saw two earlier yellow jersey holders give up. After yesterday's shocking elimination of pre-race favorite Alexandre Vinokourov and his Astana team after a failed drug test, today was business as usual. Five men escaped and built a lead of over five minutes, thus putting the best-placed rider of the group, Carlos Sastre, close to a virtual lead in the overall rankings. However, they were caught at the Aubisque. At one point of the race, the best four of the overall rankings were in the lead. This was reduced to the best three, and then the best two, and finally yellow jersey holder Michael Rasmussen was left by himself. He won the stage and improved his overall lead.

The stage in the game was won by game veteran Erik TKS of The Netherlands. This is his eleventh stage victory in 14 participations. The second place in the stage results was shared by Joost Dantuma (UK) and Wicher Otten (The Netherlands). Rune Førsund of Norway remains the overall leader. Brian Gregg (USA) and Wouter de Bruijn (The Netherlands) are new in the overall top three. They occupy second and third spot respectively.

The sixteenth stage was the final mountain stage. Given that the teams in the top of the overall rankings perform quite differently in flat stages, mountain stages and time trials, it will be quite interesting to see how the game will develop in the remaining four days.
