TdF Stage 17: July 26, 2007
Last night the race lost Cristian Moreni (failed a drug test), the six remaining riders of his Cofidis team and yellow jersey holder Michael Rasmussen (caught lying about his training locations). In stage 17 (188 flat kms), the headless peloton was down to 142 men. Eight men escaped and built a lead of over seven minutes. They managed to stay away and Daniele Bennati won the stage. After Rasmussen's departure, Alberto Contador became the new overall leader. Boonen kept green and Soler secured the polkadot jersey. With Bennati, Boonen and Chavanel in the top ten, all game teams with sprinters collect points. For the first time in the history of the game, we have five(!) joint stage winners: Craig Walsh, Erix Schokker, Kira Cornelison, Rob Haerkens and Rob Spaans. The previous record was four joint winners in 2006. For Erix Schokker, it is his second stage victory this year and his eleventh victory in the game. There were no changes in the top of the overall rankings. Rune Førsund of Norway remains the overall leader with a comfortable margin of 12 points. Brian Gregg (USA) and Wouter de Bruijn (The Netherlands) remain second and third, respectively.
