TdF Stage 18: July 27, 2007

In the flat eighteenth stage (211km), four riders escaped from the peloton and built a lead of over 17 minutes. They managed to stay away. Sandy Casar of France won the stage despite a crash earlier today. In the overall rankings, second-placed Cadel Evans took three seconds of the lead of yellow jersey holder Alberto Contador.

In the game, it was Erix Schokker of The Netherlands who won his third stage of this year and his twelfth of all time (a record). Fellow countryman Gerard Creemers took second place and Astal H. Dirts of Sweden was third. Rune Førsund of Norway remains the overall leader. Joao Borges (Portugal) is back on second place while third-placed Wouter de Bruijn of The Netherlands is joined by Brigitte Touw. Given the past scores, it looks like Førsund will comfortably win the game with Borges taking second and Brian Gregg (currently sixth) completing the top three. However, with five points separating places 3 to 7, it is a close race for third place.

Tomorrow's individual time trial will probably decide the winner of this year's Tour. Will it be Contador? Evans? Or perhaps Leipheimer?
