With 238 km, the fifth stage was the longest of this year's Tour de France. Three men escaped shortly after the start but they were caught in the final km. So there was the first bunch sprint of this Tour. Mark Cavendish (UK) won his first Tour stage. Stefan Schumacher of Germany kept the yellow jersey.
The specialized sprinter teams collected large numbers of points today. Evert Molanus of The Netherlands won the stage with no less than 99 points. Fellow countrymen Erik Huygen and Marco Alter were second and third, respectively. The stage scores also catapulted Molanus and Huygen to the top two places in the overall rankings. The jump of Evert Molanus from place 200 to place 1 is quite impressive. Andrew Howard (USA) is the only member of yesterday's top three that retained his position. He kept the third spot.
In the sixth stage, there will be an unusually early entry of the mountains in the race schedule. The stage finishes after two second category climbs.
