In stage nine (224 km), there was an early break. But again the riders in the break did not hold their lead until the finish. It was Italy's Riccardo Ricco who broke away from the rest shortly before the end of the last climb. He managed to hold a one minute lead in a 26-km descent to the finish and win his second stage. Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg retained the yellow jersey.
This stage top ten was hard to predict and therefore a score of 43 points was sufficient for claiming a top three spot in the game. The first place went to Carole Ugen from Luxembourg. Three participants shared second place: Bert Kerkhofs (The Netherlands), José Aarts (The Netherlands) and Roberto Sabadini (Italy). The number one in the overall rankings changed again today. Omar Almaini of the UK is the new leader. Former leader Johan van Ommen (The Netherlands) drops to second place while fellow countryman Bob Verweij moves up from fourteenth to third.
