TdF Stage 17: July 23, 2008

Stage 17 of 210 km with three out-of-category climbs was probably the toughest stage of this Tour edition. Two men arrived before the main pack at the base of the final climb but they were quickly caught. Carlos Sastre immediately escaped from the group of favorites and and interesting battle started. Sastre's team mates stopped pulling the group and he gained more than two minutes. The Spaniard won the stage and collected the yellow jersey. The individual time trial on Saturday will decide the outcome of the race. Sastre has one and a half minute to spare on Cadel Evans, Frank Schleck and Bernhard Kohl.

In the game, the stage was won by Effie Cozijnsen of Australia with 86 points, a total which is one of the highest scores in this edition of the game. Wicher Otten (The Netherlands), the winner of stage 10 was second while the winner of stage 15, Jörgen Jonzon of Sweden claimed third place. In the overall rankings, Dutchman Tom Denters regained the lead he had lost in stage 8. Bryan Stout (New Zealand) drops to second and Cam Atkins (Australia) moves up to place three.
