With the Alps behind and an individual time trial waiting on Saturday, the 196 km eighteenth stage was a nice target for adventurous riders. Two groups escaped from the main pack and managed to stay away until the finish line. Marcus Burghardt (Germany) outsprinted Carlos Barredo (Spain) to take the stage win. Two more small groups finished ahead of the main pack to complete the stage top 10. Carlos Sastre retained the yellow jersey.
The stage in the game was won by Dutchman Jasper van Veenendaal. With his reported age of eighteen months, he is probably the youngest stage winner in the history of the game. Matthew Struckman (USA) was second today and John Pederick (Australia) took the third spot. Few participants managed to acquire points today. Tom Denters of The Netherlands was one of them and he extended his lead in the overall rankings to 11 points. Bryan Stout of New Zealand remained second while Sandra Cunliffe of the UK moved up from sixth to third.
