Tom Denters (The Netherlands) has won the Internet Tour de France Game 2008. In the final stage, second-placed Bryan Stout (New Zealand) managed to decrease the gap to the top position in the overall rankings by 12 points but it was not enough. The final difference of 18 points between the number one and two is the largest winning margin since 1998. Joost Dantuma (The Netherlands) did well in the last stage and moved up from place five to complete the top three.
The final stage of the race (143 km) with the finish in Paris resulted in the expected bunch sprint. Geert Steegmans achieved Belgium's first stage win in this edition of the race. There were no changes in the jersey rankings. Carlos Sastre of Spain won yellow with Cadel Evans and Bernhard Kohl finishing second and third, respectively. Oscar Freire took green, Andy Schleck white while Bernhard Kohl claimed the polkadot jersey.
In the game, Evert Molanus (The Netherlands) confirmed the strength of his team in bunch sprint stages. He won his fifth stage. It is only the second time in the history of the game that a participant wins five stages in a single edition. Bastin Verweij and Bert Otten completed a Dutch 1-2-3.
This has been an exciting Tour de France. The changes in the race schedule have helped to make this an interesting edition of the Internet Tour de France Game, especially in the first week. Thank you all for participating and see you next year!
