TdF Stage 21: July 21, 1996

The 21st and final stage of the Tour de France resulted in the traditional sprint finish. The stage was won by Freek Lotsma from The Netherlands probably thanks to his team member A. Tsjmil who finished at spot 7.

The Tour de France Game 1996 has been won by Wieger van Brug. The Dutchman took over the leading position in the overall rankings after the 8th stage and never gave it away. Wieger is the only participant that was able to achieve a total score over 600 points in this edition of the game (606).

With his second place in the final stage Klaas Reijne came quite close to the first position but it was not enough. He finishes at second place with 593 points. Fellow Dutchman Hans Heeren finishes third with 576 points. The other people in the top-ten are Bruno Tuffin, Wilko Zweers, Jordi Blecua, Peter Wyatt, Nicolas Mangold, Jules van der Horst, A. Vos and N. Schmelzer.

There was only one person beside Wieger van Brug in the leading position of the overall rankings: Erix Schokker from The Netherlands. He finishes 37th but he has the satisfaction of being the most successful participant when it comes to stage wins. Erix won three stages this year. Only two other participants managed to win more than one stage: Frans Vos and Klaas Reijne who both won two stages. The highest position of winner Wieger van Brug in a stage was a second place in stage 10.

The overall scores of the participants in 1996 are lower than the scores in 1995. This is caused by the fact that the top favorites of the participants did not do as well as could have been expected. Favorite Miguel Indurain finished in the top-ten only four times, number three Alex Zulle only once and number two Laurent Jalabert who finished in the top ten 13 times last year dropped out in 1996 after having finished in the top ten only one time.

Still the top stage scores beat the scores of 1995 with quite some margin. Erix Schokker's record score of 97 points with nine cyclists of the stage top ten in his team will prove difficult to beat in future editions of the game. The All Time Hall of Fame with the 20 best stage scores holds sixteen scores of 1996 and only four of 1995 now. Future participants that want their names among these twenty record holders will have to enter a top class sprint team or a top class time trial team because those are the stages in which the highest scores have been achieved.

Wilko Zweers of The Netherlands is the only player of the top-20 of last year that was able to come back in the top-20 of 1996. Last year Wilko finished at place 15 and this year he has improved to 5th spot. Seven people of the top ten of last year participated in 1996 and only two of them got a top-100 position: Wim Penninx (6th in 1995, now 71st) and Roger Janssen (9th in 1995, now 80th). The 1995-winner Frank Koper suffered from the many dropouts and finished 258th. The robot participant Jan Modaal finished at 87th spot (13th in 1995).

Of the 198 cyclists that started in 's-Hertogenbosch 129 reached the finish in Paris. Many of the 69 dropouts were member of at least one team. The teams of Erix Schokker and Wim de Kruif have suffered most from the dropouts: they lost eight members of their teams. Nico Cost was the most successful team manager when it came to bringing his cyclists in Paris. He only lost Jalabert and arrived in Paris with a team of 14 members (404th overall).

This year two participants have managed to outperform Marleen van den Ham's all-time lowest overall score of 106 points. Warner Nauta's Dutch team achieved 96 points but it also won him the 18th stage. And Erik Waal's team has achieved a final overall score of 39 points, another score that might proof difficult to beat in future editions of the game taking into account that Erik has started with a complete team of 15 cyclists.

It has been a pleasure to organize this game for the third time. I hope to see you all back in 1997!
