The 7.3 km prologue was won by favorite Chris Boardman from the United Kingdom. Good places for Jan Ullrich, Tony Rominger and Alex Zulle (with broken collar bone). The winner of the Tour de France 1996, Bjarne Riis, finished at 13th spot.
