TdF Stage 8: July 11, 1999

The top four of today's 56 km time trial was almost the same as the top four of the prologue one week ago. Lance Armstrong (USA) won the stage and regained the yellow jersey. His fellow countryman Bobby Julich fell today and broke two ribs. He had to abandon the race.

In the game we had a top ten without anyone from The Netherlands, a very unusual event. Three countrymen of Armstrong took the top three stage positions: Nathaniel E. Baker won before Ken Eato and Stephen Buss. The top three of the overall rankings did not change. Martin Brilleman remains in the lead before Erix Schokker and Jacco Konijn. However, from thirteenth spot Michael Botzet (Germany) suddenly leaped to fourth place and he seems to have excellent chances to take over the lead in the game in a few days.

With Julich ending the stage in an ambulance, 739 of the 829 teams have lost one of their members. Monday will be a resting day in which the cyclists will be flown to the Alpes. On Tuesday the Tour will start with some serious climbing stages.
