TdF Stage 16: July 21, 1999

The sixteenth stage finished in Pau after 192 km which included four tough climbs. Twelve strong climbers created a group after the final descent and managed to reach the finish line before the other cyclists. Spaniard David Extebarria won his second stage. Lance Armstrong was in this first group and he retained the yellow jersey.

The stage in the game was won by Stefan Bus (The Netherlands). The second place was shared by three participants: Bjorn-Viggo Hagan (Norway), Gijs van Leeuwen (The Netherlands) and Rob Hiddinga (The Netherlands). In the overall rankings Michael Botzet extended his lead to 30 points. Christian Hoffellner (Austria) remains second and Dutchman Erik-Jan Meles moves to place three.
