Michael Botzet (Germany) has won the Internet Tour the France Game 1999. In the final stage runner-up Christian Hoffellner from Austria came within one point of the winner. This is the closest final margin in the history of the game after Frank Koper's win over Don Ward in 1995 with two points difference. It was Botzet's third participation in the game. In 1998 he finished 391st and in 1997 244th. Of his 15-men team with nine sprinters and six climbers only eight arrived in Paris.
The final stage over 143 km resulted in the expected sprint finish. However the expected winner, Tom Steels, did not get a good position in the final meters and Robbie McEwen (Australia) won the stage. Lance Armstrong (USA) won his first Tour de France with Alex Zulle (Switzerland) and Fernando Escartin finishing second and third.
The stage in the game was won by Wilco Vertegaal of The Netherlands. His fellow countryman Arno Brus en Edmond Huntjens finished second and third. Michael Botzet wins the game, one point ahead of Christian Hoffellner. Erik-Jan Meles (The Netherlands) holds on to the third place. The final top ten is completed by Dimitri van Agterveld (The Netherlands), Jean-Louis Simon (France), Eddy B. (The Netherlands), Martin Brilleman (The Netherlands), Rien Post (The Netherlands), Christoph Kuendig (Canada) and Arno Brus (The Netherlands). Congratulations to you all!
