TdF Game Final Remarks

In a game which has been dominated by participants from The Netherlands, Michael Botzet is the first non-Dutch winner. His total of 743 points is only six points short of the game record of 749 set by Kees Winder (The Netherlands) in 1997. However, the 1997 edition of the Tour de France included one more stage than this edition. The all-time lowest score of Erik Waal (The Netherlands) was not threatened in this edition. The final place in the game was acquired by Dwarshuis of The Netherlands with 65 points which is somewhat more than Waal's 1996 record of 39 points.

Congratulations to Michael Botzet and the other participants that did well can be put in the TdF Game guestbook: read | write.

Dropouts

Of the 180 cyclists that have started this edition of the Tour, only 39 have failed to arrive in Paris. This is a record low in the history of the game. On average about 70 cyclists drop out during the race. Until this edition, 1994 was the best edition with only 58 cyclists failing to reach Paris.

Despite the low number of dropouts, no participant has managed to arrive in Paris with a complete team this year. Four people have restricted their loss to one cyclist: Atletico Bintang (Italy, finished 797th), Ken Eato (USA, 598th), Steward Craig (Antarctica, 781st) and W.A. Kortleever (The Netherlands, 513th). The participants that have suffered most from this year's dropouts have lost nine riders. They are Justitian (The Netherlands, 280th), Mart Vrijmoed (The Netherlands, 445th), Martijn Wertwijn (The Netherlands, 617th) and Paolo Quaglia (Belgium, 526th). Strangely enough the teams that have most cyclists have done better in the game on average than teams that have lost the least number of cyclists. The smallest team to arrive in Paris is the one of Rui Silva (Portugal, 758th): five cyclists are left of his original nine-men team. Game winner Michael Botzet arrived in Paris with eight of his fifteen-men team.

Popular cyclists

At the first rest day I presented three average country teams and compared their scores with the overall average team Jan Modaal. The final results of the teams are as follows:

place points
 149. 616 Team UK
 191. 600 Team USA
 219. 589 Jan Modaal
 299. 566 Dutch Team

Of the three countries that have been examined the participants from the United Kingdom have been the best in constructing a fantasy team. Their team has acquired more points than the other two teams and was also better than the average participant team Jan Modaal.

Results of experienced participants

Michael Botzet has won the game in the third year that he participated. In the previous two editions he finished between the 200th and the 400th spot. It is difficult to perform well in different editions of the game. Shane Moore (Ireland) is the only top twenty ranked player of last year (6th) that has managed to finish within the top twenty this year (19th). The only other player that has managed back-to-back top twenty positions in this game is Wilko Zweers (The Netherlands): 15th in 1995 and 5th in 1996. Here are the 1999 results of other players that have done well in the game (position and score):

 12. 707 Erix Schokker (New Zealand/The N.) won stages in 4 editions
 37. 675 Dick Blom (The Netherlands) stage score record holder
 41. 673 Klaas Reijne (The Netherlands) second in 1996
 48. 670 Rob Spaans (The Netherlands) third in 1998
 91. 534 Bas Zwaan (The Netherlands) third in 1995
127. 625 Wim Hoefs (The Netherlands) third in 1997
133. 624 Frank Koper (The Netherlands) 1995 winner
284. 572 Hans Splinter (The Netherlands) third in 1998
336. 553 Tako Molanus (The Netherlands) 1998 winner
361. 545 Lee Rusk (USA) second in 1998

Seven of these ten participants finished within the top 150. The other three finished outside this group but within the top half.
