Cyclist list Tour de France 1999

July 02
A provisional list of participating cyclists has been released on the official Tour site. It mentions the following riders which had not been mentioned on this site: Forconi (Mercatone Uno), Pinotti (Lampre), Navas (Banesto), Giunti (Cantina Tollo) and Ljungquist (Cantina Tollo).
June 30
Richard Virenque, runner-up of 1997, will start in this Tour. The French cyclist was banned by the Tour bosses but the world cycling association UCI has decided that preventing Virenque from competing this time was against the rules.
June 24
Marco Pantani, winner of last years Tour, will not start in this edition. Pantani was suspended for two weeks after failing a health test in the Giro de Italia. He has said that he will focus on the cycling events in the final part of the season (Vuelta de España and World Championships).
June 21
The Tour winner of 1997, Jan Ullrich, has announced that he will not take part this year. He is injured. His Telekom team mate Bjarne Riis, Tour winner of 1996, announced earlier that he will not participate in this Tour.
June 17:
The Vini Caldirola team has been taken back from the list of participating teams after their leading man Gontchar was disallowed to start in the Tour de Suisse. His reb blood cell level was too high and this could imply that he has taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs. The team has been replaced by Cantina Tollo.
June 16:
The names of the participating teams have been announced. The TVM team and the cyclists Virenque, Roux and Gaumont are not allowed to take part because the Tour bosses suspect them of being involved in taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs. The members of the teams are not known yet.
February 27:
The names of 16 participating teams have been announced. The other teams will be selected after the Giro and the Dauphiné Libéré. The official list of participating cyclists will probably not be available before Friday July 2.

For detailed general information about the members of the teams please check out cycling team pages of Bill Mitchell and Stefaan Degryse. You can also examine 1998 participant list but there is no guarantee that the same cyclists will take part this year.
